Is Phosphorus fertilization the key to improving black bean yield?
Black bean is one of Haiti’s most important food crops, yet yields remain among the lowest in the Caribbean. One major constraint is phosphorus deficiency, which limits plant growth in both acidic mountain soils and alkaline lowland soils. This study evaluated how different phosphorus fertilizer rates affected black bean production under contrasting soil conditions to develop soil-specific fertilizer recommendations for Haitian farmers.
Why it Matters
Phosphorus is one of the most limiting nutrients for crop production in Haiti. Understanding how crops respond under different soil conditions helps refine fertilizer recommendations, improve yields, reduce production costs, and promote more efficient nutrient management.
Research Contribution
This study evaluated phosphorus fertilizer requirements for black bean production across contrasting acidic and alkaline soils in Haiti, providing practical information to support soil-specific nutrient management and improve crop productivity.
